Motorcycle Pre-Ride Checklist: A Simple Routine

A short pre-ride inspection can help you catch obvious problems before they become roadside failures.

Important: Motorcycle designs and service procedures vary. Use your owner’s manual or manufacturer service information for exact specifications, and stop if a repair requires skills or equipment you do not have.

1. Tires and wheels

Check tire pressure against the motorcycle’s specified cold pressure. Look for punctures, cuts, bulges and abnormal wear. Confirm that wheels appear secure and that there is no obvious damage.

2. Controls

Operate the front brake lever, rear brake pedal, clutch and throttle. Controls should move normally and return as expected. Do not ride if a control sticks or behaves differently from normal.

3. Lights and horn

Check the headlight, brake light, indicators and horn. Visibility equipment is part of safe road use and may also be required by local regulations.

4. Fluids and leaks

Look for fresh oil, coolant or brake-fluid leaks. Check fluid levels according to the motorcycle’s specific procedure. A new leak should be investigated before riding.

5. Chain and drive

On chain-drive motorcycles, look at chain condition and lubrication. Make sure there is no obvious damage or abnormal slack. Belt- and shaft-drive systems have their own inspection requirements.

6. Start and listen

After starting, pay attention to unusual grinding, knocking, persistent warning lights or abnormal smoke. A new warning sign is a reason to stop and investigate rather than ignore it.
