Why a Motorcycle Overheats: Common Causes and What to Do
Learn the common reasons a motorcycle may run too hot and the safest response when temperature rises unexpectedly.
Treat overheating as a warning
A rising temperature gauge, warning light, steam or unusual coolant smell can indicate an overheating problem. Continuing to ride an overheating engine can turn a manageable cooling-system issue into major engine damage.
Low coolant
On liquid-cooled motorcycles, check the coolant level only when the system is cool and follow the reservoir and radiator instructions in the owner’s manual. Never open a hot radiator cap because pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
Blocked airflow
Mud, insects or debris can reduce airflow through the radiator. Inspect the radiator surface visually and clean it using a method recommended for the motorcycle. Do not bend delicate fins with excessive water pressure.
Cooling fan problems
If the motorcycle uses an electric cooling fan, the fan should operate when the system reaches its designed temperature. If it never runs when expected, there may be an electrical, sensor, relay or fan-motor problem.
Thermostat, water pump or circulation problems
A thermostat that does not open correctly, a damaged water pump or air trapped in the cooling system can restrict coolant circulation. These faults generally require model-specific diagnostic procedures.
What to do if the warning appears
Move to a safe location, switch the engine off when appropriate, and allow the motorcycle to cool. Do not pour cold water over a very hot engine. Once cool, inspect for obvious leaks and low coolant, but do not resume riding until you are confident the problem is resolved.
