Motorcycle Air Filter Maintenance: Inspection and Replacement

Find out what an air filter does, when to inspect it, and why replacement intervals vary by motorcycle and riding environment.

What the air filter does

The air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine while allowing the required airflow. A restricted or damaged filter can affect performance and, in some circumstances, allow contaminants into the engine.

Follow the service schedule

Manufacturers specify inspection and replacement intervals based on the motorcycle design and expected operating conditions. Frequent riding in dusty environments can justify more frequent inspections.

Paper filters

Many motorcycles use disposable paper-type elements. These should generally be replaced when dirty or when the service schedule calls for replacement. Avoid washing a filter unless the manufacturer specifically says it is washable.

Foam filters

Some off-road and other motorcycles use reusable foam elements. Cleaning and oiling procedures are specific to the filter design, so use the filter manufacturer’s recommended products and process.

Check the airbox

When the filter is removed, inspect the airbox for dirt, water or signs that the filter has not sealed correctly. Do not allow loose debris to fall into the intake.
